Wayne. An inscription was even left at a Nike store in the city of Manchester which read “JOIN CITY AND YOU ARE DEAD”. Rooney cited United’s lack of star qualities as his reason for wanting to leave and bulked as soon as a new deal was waved in front of him. Fast forward 3 seasons later; 2 league medals, two community shield, a champions league losers medal, Shinji kagawa, Robin Van Persie, a new Michael Carrick, Sir Alex’s retirement and David Moyes appointment, we are back on the same track as in 2010. To be honest I don’t really know what is going on in Wayne’s mind and am sure same goes to any one of you reading this. He is at the biggest club in the world where He is loved and adored so this is why I feel he will be doing himself wrong to leave Manchester United.
1. ATTAINING LEGENDARY STATUS
Rooney has spent nine seasons as a Manchester United player though not all nine seasons has been glamorous, but why would he want to throw all that away into thin air and start a new life in another club. Wherever he decides to go to if Manchester United decides to sell him, he will never be regarded as a key man and he will never welcomed to Old Trafford. He will probably be booed at Anfield for being a an ex-Everton player, booed at Goodison park for leaving them, booed at the Etihad for being an ex-Manchester United and the worst of it all booed at Old trafford for the circumstances that led to his sale. Am sure Rooney does not want that.
2. OVERHUALING SIR BOBBY CHALTON’s RECORD AT UNITED AND ENGLAND BOTH MANCHESTER UNITED PLAYER
Some section of the media cites that Rooney is probably not motivated any more at Manchester united. What bigger motivation does he need when Sir Bobby Charlton himself has urged him to stay at Manchester united and beat his goal scoring record for both club and country? What bigger motivation does he need when he
goes to Old Trafford and all member of staff treats him like a prince?
3. LEADING THE NEW GENERATION OF UNITED PLAYERS
We all knew that sooner or later that Sir Alex was going to retire, which he did at the end of last season. Welcome to the David Moyes Era. Rooney is currently the 3rd longest serving Manchester united player.
David Moyes inherited a very good squad with the combination and balance of age groups rightly spread out. Wayne Rooney will turn 28 in October and he stands in-between the two age groups of players playing for Manchester United. In no time Ryan Giggs will retire, Rio will either retire or move on. Same goes to Carrick, Vidic and Evra. Who is the next player we can call on?? Wayne Mark Rooney. De Gea, Smalling, Jones, Januzaj, Welbeck, Cleverly, Rafael, fabio and Zaha for their football brilliance will all get to a stage in their career where they would need guidance. Rooney has seen it all with fergie, played with club legends Roy Keane, Scholes, and Gary Neville. He knows how the club and fans craves for success. If he can read between lines he should know that he has a huge future ahead of him as a leader which is good enough to motivate any human being.
4. THE FANS STILL LOVE HIM
The fans stuck to Wayne Rooney like butters sticks to bread all through his crisis in 2010. The club and supporters always stood by him. No other club defends the interest of its players the way Manchester United does. Eric Cantona, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs can all attest to that. He will never get that kind of love and support anywhere else. Although it will take a while for the fans to forgive him and for things return to normality, there is no crisis that can never be resolved. Once he starts coming good with the goals and
kissing the clubs badge again, everybody will forget what once happened because as football fans we all act like little children.
5. STAYING AND FIGHTING FOR HIS IDENTITY
Even with the arrival of Robin Van Persie, hardcore Manchester United fans still see Rooney as the main man in the team. As He himself said a while ago that He has served the club for nine seasons and he has nothing to prove to the club which in my own opinion was right. Last season was not a good one for him because he got injured at the beginning of the season against Fulham and RVP was weighing in with the goals before he came back from injury. Statistically he didn’t perform badly last season because he was always played out of position and when RVP’s goals dried up, Wayne always came to the rescue. I personally believe he should stay on and fight to be the top man again. At United he has played with great strikers and always held unto his role, Nistelrooy, Saha, Tevez, Alan Smith, Berbatov, Solkjear, Henrik Larsoon, Owen and Ronaldo all included.
6. HIS GLOBAL BRAND NAME
I am a strong fan of Wayne Rooney, my family and everybody around me knows this. I live in Lagos, Nigeria where the Premier league has a strong following. Not too long ago a lad walked up to me and asked if it was true Rooney wants to leave Manchester United with a sad look on his face. The news was all over local
tabloids and on the internet. I had to maintain a brave face and told him it was all false stories from sports writers. Am still hoping he doesn’t leave because I would have some explanation to do the lad. The same scenario holds true for all Manchester united fans worldwide. Nobody wants to see him leave.
7. THE GRASS IS NOT ALWAYS GREENER AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE
The saying above holds true in all aspect of human life. Where does he hope to end up? Arsenal? For Christ sake RVP left that sinking ship for Manchester United. Monaco or PSG where he would play second fiddle to Falcao and Cavani? Bayern Munich where the team is littered with star dust? Chelsea? That should be his
last destination because we all know that Jose Mourinho is a selfish man always concerned with the number trophies he has irrespective of how it affects the team or players after he leaves the club. Jose Mourinho doesn’t need Rooney. He is just bidding for him to unsettle David Moyes before the season kicks off. Even if he wants him at Chelsea, It is just to decimate Manchester United of a star player. Rooney should take example with the resent fall off between Mourinho and Christiano Ronaldo
All said and done it might be hard on Manchester United if we lose Wayne Rooney at the beginning of David
Moyes era. Even if we lose him, no one player can be bigger than a club. Other players would definitely up their game. We all need to rally around David Moyes and give him the support he needs as Sir Alex rightly said when he retired.
